DEPTH OF FIELD with 50mm f/1.4 00 15 10 9 8 7 6 5 4 2 1/ 1.4 1/5.6 f/11 1/22 I 0 Distance (m) Depth of field is the area of acceptable sharpness in front of and behind the point of focus. The depth of field becomes progressively greater as the lens opening becomes smaller. The distance at which the lens is focused also affects the depth of field: it increases as you get further away. The focal length of the lens is another factor to determine the depth of field. The shorter the lens, the greater the depth of field. To check the depth of field on your camera, you can use the depth-of-field scale in front of the aperture ring on the lens. First focus the camera, then move the aperture ring to the shooting aperture. Now check the f-numbers on the scale in front of the aperture ring. Notice the alignment in relation to the distance markings on the focusing-ring scale. Your depth of field is between the distances aligned with the proper pair of f-stop numbers. • 34
