Dictating Tips for a More Efficient Dictating Before you start dictating • Organize your thoughts. • Make notes or an outline of what you want to dictate. • Check that the cassette is erased. (See page 21.) When you start dictating • Identify yourself. (Name, department, phone number, etc.) • Indicate the type of dictating. (Memo, letter, etc.) • Give transcribing instructions. (Type of stationery, number of copies, envelopes, etc.) • Specify distribution. (Name, addresses, etc.) During dictating • Relax and speak clearly, at normal speed. • Short sentences are best. • Include punctuation. • Spell difficult or unusual words. • Correct your mistakes. (Review and redictate.) (See page 15.) • At the end of each dictated material, record an LTR signal. 16
