100 MAINTENANCE AND ADJUSTMENT Valve Clearance Valve and valve seat wear decreases valve clearance, upsetting valve timing. Air Cleaner A clogged air cleaner restricts the engine's air intake, increasing fuel consumption, reducing engine power, and causing spark plug fouling. The air cleaner element must be cleaned in accordance with the Periodic Maintenance Chart. In dusty areas, the element should be cleaned more frequently than the recommended interval. After riding through rain or on muddy roads, the element should be cleaned immediately. The element should be replaced if it is damaged. NOTICE If valve clearance is left unadjusted, wear will eventually cause the valves to remain partly open, which lowers performance, burns the valves and valve seats, and may cause serious engine damage. Valve clearance for each valve should be checked and adjusted in accordance with the Periodic Maintenance Chart. Inspection and adjustment should be done only by a competent mechanic following the instructions in the Service Manual.
