Conventions Preface Conventions Throughout this publication, these conventions are used in reference to switch platforms: • Catalyst enterprise LAN switches-Refers to the Catalyst 4000 series and Catalyst 4500 series switches, Catalyst 2948G, and Catalyst 2980G switches. • Catalyst 4000 family switches-Refers to the Catalyst 4000 series and Catalyst 4500 series switches. The Catalyst 4000 series includes the Catalyst 4003, Catalyst 4006, and Catalyst 4912G switches. The Catalyst 4500 series includes the Catalyst 4503 and Catalyst 4506 switches. Command descriptions use these conventions: boldface font italic font [] {x | y | z} [x | y | z] string Commands, command options, and keywords are in boldface. Arguments for which you supply values are in italics. Elements in square brackets are optional. Alternative keywords are grouped in braces and separated by vertical bars. Optional alternative keywords are grouped in brackets and separated by vertical bars. A nonquoted set of characters. Do not use quotation marks around the string or the string will include the quotation marks. Instructions and screen examples use these conventions: screen font boldface screen font italic screen font Ctrl-D [] !, # . . . Terminal sessions and information that the system displays are in screen font. Information you must enter is in boldface screen font. Arguments for which you supply values are in italic screen font. The key combination Ctrl-D means to hold down the Control key while you press the D key. Nonprinting characters, such as passwords are in angle brackets. Default responses to system prompts are in square brackets. An exclamation point (!) or a pound sign (#) at the beginning of a line of code indicates a comment line. Indicates that screen output not relevant to the example was removed to save space and preserve clarity. Notes use these conventions: Note Means reader take note.
