Chapter 1 Cisco uBR7200 Series Overview Hardware Component Descriptions Network Processing Engine The network processing engine (NPE) maintains and executes the system management functions for the Cisco uBR7200 series routers. The NPE also shares the system memory and environmental monitoring functions with the I/O controller. The NPE performs the following system management functions: • Sending and receiving routing protocol updates • Managing tables, caches, and buffers • Monitoring interface and environmental status • Providing Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) management and console/Telnet interface • Accounting and switching of data traffic • Booting and reloading images • Managing port adapters (recognition and initialization during OIR) Refer to Network Processing Engine and Network Services Engine Installation and Configuration Guide, for specifications, and removal and replacement instructions for these components.
