General Usability Question: What system configurations should I avoid for disaster recovery? Answer: For all Windows NT platforms, you should avoid the following configurations. ■ The option cannot recover your system if the boot volume is larger than 4 GB. ■ The option cannot always recover stripes, spanned, and mirrored volumes. For system volumes of these types, you should first, recover the system; and then recreate the striped, spanned, and mirrored volumes using windisk.exe. This process enables you to recover volumes. After running windisk.exe, you can recover remote volumes using the client agent. ■ You cannot use drive letters Y and Z. These drive letters are reserved for the CD-ROM drive and the MS-RAMDRIVE. ■ Disaster recovery under Windows NT 4.0 does restore volume labels. ■ The option does not support local disaster recovery on Windows NT platforms. For all Windows 2000 platforms, you should avoid making the boot disk of the system a dynamic disk. Question: There are a number of methods of disaster recovery in Windows 2000. Which one do I use? Answer: We recommend the using the bootable CD method to perform disaster recovery on a Windows 2000 computer. For more information about using the bootable CD method, see the "Disaster Recovery on Windows 2000" chapter. C-2 Disaster Recovery Option Guide
