byte A unit of information consisting of eight bits. A byte usually corresponds to one character or code. cache The area of memory that stores internally generated fonts. character set A collection of letters, numbers, and symbols. control codes Special codes used to control printer functions such as sounding the beeper and performing a carriage return or line feed. data dump mode See hex dump mode. decimal See number systems. default A value or setting that takes effect when the equipment is turned on, reset, or initialized. download A way of transferring information from a computer to a printer. download font A font that is loaded into the printer's memory from an outside source, such as a computer. dpi Dots per inch.
