Solutions to common problems • BEFORE YOU CALL Problem Oven smokes excessively when broiling. Flames inside oven or smoking from oven vent. Possible Causes Oven door was left open. Meat too close to upper burner. Meat not prepared for broil. Insert placed incorrectly on broil pan (some models). Excessive spillovers or grease built up inside oven. Excessive food spillovers in oven. Surface burners will Surface control knob not set not ignite. at the lite position. Burner caps are missing or not seated properly. Burner ports are clogged. Electric power outage. Surface burner flame uneven or only part way around burner cap. Power cord is disconnected. Burner caps are not seated properly. Moisture may be present after cleaning. Burner slots or ports are clogged. Surface burner flame is too high. Surface knob is set too high. Burner caps are not seated properly. Surface burner flame is orange. Dust particles in gas line. Residence near salt water. Solutions Be sure oven door is closed when broiling. Reposition oven rack lower to provide proper clearance between the food & the upper burner. Remove excess fat from meat. Remove fatty edges. Always place insert on the broil pan with ribs up and slot holes downward. This will allow grease to drip into pan. Regular cleaning is needed when broiling frequently. Wipe up any excessive spillovers before starting the oven. Should an oven fire occur, close the oven door and turn the oven OFF. If the fire continues, use a fire extinguisher. DO NOT put water or flour on the fire! Flour may be explosive. Push in and turn the surface control knob to the lite position until burner ignites; then turn knob out of the lite position and adjust to desired flame size. Check that all surface burner caps are level and seated correctly on surface burner heads. See "Cleaning the cooktop and surface burners" in the Care & Cleaning section. With all surface burners turned OFF, use a small-gauge wire or needle to burner head slots and ignition ports. See "Cleaning the cooktop and surface burners" in the Care & Cleaning section for additional cleaning instructions. If needed, surface burners may be lit manually. See section on Setting Surface Controls. Plug power cord into the power outlet. Check that all surface burner caps are level and seated correctly on surface burner heads. See "Cleaning the cooktop and surface burners" in the Care & Cleaning section. Lightly fan the flame & allow burner to operate until flame is full. Dry the surface burners thoroughly following the instructions under "Cleaning the cooktop and surface burners" provided in the Care & Cleaning section. With all surface burners turned OFF, use a small-gauge wire or needle to burner head slots and ignition ports. See "Cleaning the cooktop and surface burners" in the Care & Cleaning section for additional cleaning instructions. Adjust surface control knob to a lower flame setting. Burner caps are not seated properly. Check that all surface burner caps are level and seated correctly on surface burner heads. See "Cleaning the cooktop and surface burners" in the Care & Cleaning section. Allow burner to operate a few minutes until flame turns blue. A slightly orange flame may be unavoidable from salt content in air. 33
