After the disk is replaced, use sasmgr(1M) to configure the new disk as spare: sasmgr add -D /dev/sasdX -q raid -q spare -q enc_bay=: (where X is the instance of the SAS controller and : is the location of the disk to be configured as spare). • By default, RAID volumes are created with Auto-Configure enabled. If you replace a physical disk which is part of a RAID volume, a re-sync will start automatically and all data on the new disk will be lost. Do not insert a replacement disk unless you are sure that any existing data has been backed up.
