Off-the-shelf image capture products often produce a migration process filled with errors, requiring several hours to troubleshoot. Insight Server Migration software eases the migration process using a series of steps: identify the source, identify the target, and click ―GO.‖ Insight Server Migration software transfers the OS, applications, and data without any errors; it even installs the required drivers on the destination server. This automated process can reduce migration time by about 75%. Insight Server Migration software supports four types of server migrations: physical-to-physical physical-to-virtual virtual-to-physical virtual-to-virtual For physical-to-physical server migrations, the source server can be any vendor's x86 server. For virtual-to-virtual migrations, Insight Server Migration software can migrate between the virtualization platforms mentioned previously. Virtual Connect technology Virtual Connect (VC) is a set of Converged Network, Ethernet, and Fibre Channel interconnect modules and embedded software that help reduce the complexities of connection management in a server blade environment. Virtual Connect virtualizes the connections between servers and the network infrastructure (server-edge virtualization) so that the LAN and SAN can use addresses that are associated with a server profile instead of individual servers. Once you define the LAN and SAN addresses within a Virtual Connect domain, you can deploy, move or change servers without having to coordinate with the LAN and SAN administrators. For more information, read ―HP Virtual Connect technology for the HP BladeSystem c-Class.‖ Virtual Connect Management HP Virtual Connect Enterprise Manager (VCEM) and HP Virtual Connect Manager (VCM) let you set up and administer the server connection profiles for servers connected with Virtual Connect. VCM is a web console integrated into the firmware of Virtual Connect Converged Network and Ethernet modules. VCM manages single Virtual Connect domains and is ideal for environments with up to four BladeSystem enclosures. The highly scalable VCEM solution centralizes network connection management and workload mobility for thousands of servers using Virtual Connect to connect to data and storage networks. VCEM (v6.00 or greater) has a single console that controls up to 250 VC domains (up to 1000 BladeSystem enclosures with 16,000 servers)3. It discovers and aggregates existing VC domain resources into the VCEM console and address repository. HP licenses VCEM per BladeSystem c-Class enclosure, with separate options for c3000 and c7000 enclosures. Virtual Connect Flex-10 technology Virtual Connect Flex-10 is available on all ProLiant 400 and 600 series G7 BladeSystem servers. It is a hardware-based technology that lets you separate the bandwidth of a single 10GbE port into four physical NIC devices when using Virtual Connect Flex-10 Ethernet modules and Flex-10 NICs. Through VCEM, you can set the bandwidth up to 10Gb/s. You can also change the allocated bandwidth of an active FlexNIC without rebooting the server. Flex-10 lets you fully utilize your 10-Gb bandwidth, making your 10GbE infrastructure more cost efficient and easier to manage. It provides four times more network connections per server blade, cutting network connection costs by up to 75% per virtual server. Because Flex-10 is hardware-based, 3 250 domains x 4 enclosures = 1000 enclosures x 16 servers per enclosure = 16,000 servers 11
