Glossary Acronyms and Abbreviations DTMF EMS ERI Dual-Tone Multi Frequency (or "touch-tone") is a method used to communicate keys pressed on the phone. Pressing a key generates two simultaneous tones, one for the row and one for the column to determine which key was pressed. Enhanced Messaging Service is an extension to SMS for cellular phones available on specific networks. An EMS enabled phone can send and receive messages with special text formatting (such as bold or italic), animations, pictures, icons, sound effects, and special ring tones. EMS messages sent to non-EMS devices will be displayed as SMS transmissions.
