22. Starting and Ending Seams To Start a Seam To start a seam on most fabrics, first bring the thread tail under the presser foot and then to the left of the machine. Hold the thread tail and step on the foot controller to begin sewing. Sew until you have created a 3" (7.5 cm) chain. Place the fabric on the feed dogs in front of the foot. Start sewing. Note: * For heavy or thick fabrics, it is recommended to use SINGER needles #2022 size 100/16. * Heavy or thick fabrics may be more difficult to feed than others. In these cases, start by cutting a notch at the beginning of the seam about 1" (2.5 cm) down from the top of the fabric, and along the seam line. * Lift the presser foot and raise the needles. Place the notch so that the top edge of the fabric is in front of the needles, with the cut edge lined up next to the blade. * Lower the presser foot and sew. To End a Seam To end a seam, continue sewing past the end of the fabric until the thread chain forms. Cut the thread, leaving at least 3" (7.5 cm) at the end of the fabric.
