Welcome! Thank you for purchasing the Sony DR-BT1 Bluetooth earset. Before operating the unit, please read this manual thoroughly and retain it for future reference. Some features are: • Wireless system that allows you to talk by mobile phone. • Car Air-vent clip for car use. • Fits on either your right or left ear. • Convinient charger with belt clip • Up to 7hours for talking. Up to 160hours for standby. • Flexible pipe microphone. • Volume control function on the headset. What's Bluetooth? Bluetooth is a new technology that enables wireless data communication by mobile phones, computers or other mobile devices. Bluetooth wireless technology operates within a range of about 10 meters* (about 30 feet). * Obstacles (body, metal, wall, etc.) or reception conditions may adversely affect the usable range. N Getting started Unpacking Check that you have the following items: • Bluetooth earset (1) • Hanger (Size S) (1) • Battery charger (1) • AC power adaptor (1) • Car attachment (1) Hook (S) (1) Hook (L) (1) Spacer (2) • Warranty (1) • Operating Instructions (1) Identifying Bluetooth earset 2 1 3 4 5 7 L R 8 6 1 Hanger 2 Multifunction button Controls various functions of the Bluetooth earset. 3 LED indicator Indicates the status of the Bluetooth earset. 4 VOLUME + 5 VOLUME 6 Pipe microphone 7 Housing 8 Contact terminals Battery charger 1 2 3 1 Contact pins 2 Belt clip 3 DC IN 4.5 V jack Charging the units The Bluetooth earset contains a rechargeable Lithium-Ion battery, that should be charged before using for the first time. 1 Dock the Bluetooth earset with the Battery charger. 2 Connect the supplied AC power adaptor to the DC IN 4.5 V jack on the Battery charger. When the AC power adaptor is connected to an AC outlet, the unit will turn off automatically. To an AC outlet AC power adaptor (supplied) To DC IN 4.5 V jack 3 Make sure that the indicator lights up green. If the LED on the Bluetooth earset does not light up green, dock again, and make sure the indicator lights up green. Charging is completed in about 2.5 hours* and the indicator goes off. The indicators light up green * Time required to fully charge empty battery. Caution If this unit detects a problem while charging, the LED may blink green, and will turn off although the charge is not complete. Check for the following causes: - Environmental temperature exceeds the range of 0˚C- 40˚C (32˚F-104˚F). - There is a problem with the battery etc. In this case, charge again within the above-mentioned temperature range. If the problem persists, consult your nearest Sony dealer. Notes • The unit cannot operate while charging. • Charge in an environmental temperature of between 0˚C and 40˚C (between 32˚F and 104˚F). • Avoid exposure to temperature extremes, direct sunlight, moisture, sand, dust or mechanical shock. Never leave in a car parked in the sun. • Use only the supplied AC power adaptor. Do not use any other AC power adaptor. Polarity of the plug The low battery display The LED display color of the unit changes from blue to green when battery charge is low. In this case, recharge the battery immediately. After use, recharge the unit frequently. Charging and usage hours Usage time from fully charged. Bluetooth earset Talk time (up to) Standby time (up to) 7 hours 160 hours Time stated above may vary, depending on ambient temperature or conditions of use. Note If the life of the built-in rechargeable battery drops to half the normal length, the battery should be replaced. Consult your nearest Sony dealer for replacement of the rechargeable battery. Pairing the units To pair the Bluetooth earset with a Bluetooth mobile phone The Bluetooth earset can pair directly with a Bluetooth mobile phone. Do the following. 1 Place the Bluetooth earset and the Bluetooth mobile phone close together within 1 m. within 1m 2 While the Bluetooth earset is turned off, press and hold the Multifunction button. The LED will blink in blue for the first 7 seconds (approx.). Keep pressed until the LED blinks blue and green. 3 Search the Bluetooth earset by the Bluetooth mobile phone. When the Bluetooth mobile phone detects the Bluetooth earset, "DR-BT1" will appear in the display of the Bluetooth mobile phone. 4 Select "DR-BT1" in the list displayed on your Bluetooth mobile phone. If "DR-BT1" is not displayed, repeat steps 1 to 3. 5 Input the passkey* [0000] so that passkey of "DR-BT1" will be requested to be input from your Bluetooth mobile phone. * Passkey may also be called the following. - Pass code, PIN code, PIN number, Password. 6 If the LED of the Bluetooth earset changes from blinking blue and green to blinking blue slowly (every 3 seconds), the pairing has completed. The unit will enter the standby mode. The display of the Bluetooth mobile phone will usually show that pairing has completed. Notes • To pair the units, pairing mode should be used. Time out for pairing mode the unit is about 60 seconds. • Refer to the manual supplied with your Bluetooth mobile phone. N Operating the system Wearing the earset 1 Hook the Bluetooth earset around your ear, as you would glasses. 2 Adjust the position of the Bluetooth earset to fit comfortably. Changing the direction of the hanger This unit can be worn on the right or left ear by the following procedure. Example: When changing over from right to left ear. 1 Holding the housing firmly, unlatch the hanger assembly. L 2 Holding the housing, rotate the hanger, and then pull out in the direction of the arrow. L R g L 3 Rotate the housing to the other side. L R 4 Attach the hanger in the direction of the arrow as illustrated below. Marked L Marked L Marked R Note The housing and the hanger are marked left (L) and right (R). For example, when using the left ear, the housing is set in the L position, and the hanger is attached with the L mark visible. Tip The unit comes with 2 hanger sizes to ensure a comfortable fit. Blue/Green blink Notes • The LED color of the unit changes from blue to green when battery charge is low. • Communication may sometimes not occur, even though the Multifunction button on the Bluetooth earset is pressed. In such a case, the LED double blinks (blue) 3 to 5 times, after which the Bluetooth earset enters standby mode. Failure to communicate will occur in the following cases: - The Bluetooth earset is not paired with your Bluetooth mobile phone. - The Bluetooth function on your Bluetooth mobile phone is not activated. Operating the units To use this unit with your Bluetooth mobile phone The Bluetooth earset can communicate directly with your Bluetooth mobile phone. For details, refer to the manual supplied with your Bluetooth mobile phone. Note The Bluetooth earset should be paired with the Bluetooth mobile phone beforehand. A Prepare the Bluetooth earset B Prepare the Bluetooth mobile phone C Connect between the Bluetooth earset and the Bluetooth mobile phone D Call E Shut down the Bluetooth earset A Prepare the Bluetooth earset Press and hold the Multifunction button on the Bluetooth earset for about 7 seconds. When the LED blinks blue rapidly (for 1 second), release the button. The LED starts to blink blue slowly (every 3 seconds). A low/high beep sounds when the unit turns on. Note Take care that the Multifunction button is not held down for more than about 10 seconds, otherwise pairing mode is entered. B Prepare the Bluetooth mobile phone Confirm the Bluetooth mobile phone is turned on. Activate the Bluetooth function of the Bluetooth mobile phone. For details, refer to the manual supplied with your Bluetooth mobile phone. C Connect between the Bluetooth earset and the Bluetooth mobile phone With the Bluetooth earset and the Bluetooth mobile phone already paired, Bluetooth communication connects by pressing the Multifunction button. In the following cases, commuicate again between the Bluetooth earset and the Bluetooth mobile phone. - the Bluetooth earset is turned off - the Bluetooth mobile phone (or its Bluetooth function) is turned off - the Bluetooth function on the Bluetooth mobile phone and the Bluetooth earset are in sleep mode - Bluetooth communication has terminated Note Refer to the manual supplied with your Bluetooth mobile phone about Bluetooth communication and the Bluetooth function. D Call To call: Use the keypad of your Bluetooth mobile phone to dial the number, then press the call button. If there is no sound from the Bluetooth earset, press the Multifunction button. Tip It is possible to call in various ways, depending on the Bluetooth mobile phone. Refer to the manual supplied with your Bluetooth mobile phone. - You can call by pressing the Multifunction button using the voice-dial function when in standby. - You can call a specific number by pressing the Multifunction button when in standby. - You can call to the last number by holding the Volume + or - button in standby (only when using the Hands-free profile). To receive a call: When the telephone is ringing, Bluetooth communication will connect automatically, and sound will be heard through the Bluetooth earset. Press the Multifunction button on the Bluetooth earset. Note If you pressed the call button on the Bluetooth mobile phone, some Bluetooth mobile phones may have handset use priority. In this case, set to talk with the Bluetooth earset by pressing the Multifunction button, or by operating the Bluetooth mobile phone. For details, refer to the manual supplied with your Bluetooth mobile phone. To terminate a call: You can end a call by pressing the Multifunction button on the Bluetooth earset. In the following cases, audio communication terminates automatically. - the end button on the Bluetooth mobile phone is pressed - the recipient hangs up the calling E Shut down the Bluetooth earset Press and hold the Multifunction button on the Bluetooth earset until the LED turns off. When the unit has turned off, the LED on the Bluetooth earset blinks green rapidly (for 2 seconds). A high/low beep sounds when the unit turns off. At this time, the current volume level is stored. Note If the unit turns off when charging, the current volume level is not stored. To adjust the volume (To pair with the Bluetooth mobile phone) Press the VOLUME + or - while audio connection. A beep corresponding to the selected volume is heard every time you press either button. When the volume setting is maximum or minimum, the beep does not sound. VOLUME + VOLUME - To install the car attachment 1 Attach the hook to the rear of the attachment. Ensure it is the correct way round. (See illustration.) Note • The volume does not change although the beep sound is heard when not connecting. (only when using the Headset profile) • When the sound is low, raise the volume of your mobile phone. The sound will be clearer. Operation of the Bluetooth earset buttons The operation of the buttons on the Bluetooth earset varies depending on the pairing device. There are 2 profiles for Bluetooth mobile phone pairing. Refer to the manual supplied with your Bluetooth mobile phone. Refer to the manual supplied your Bluetooth mobile phone. *2 The beep sounds every 3 seconds while the microphone is muted. To cancel muting, press the volume + or - button. How to use the car attachment The car attachment (supplied) can be used to hold the Battery charger, by installing it in the vent of the air conditioner of your car. This is convenient for using while driving. Standard installation Horizontal fin 17 mm (max) 9 mm (min) 3 mm (max) 7 mm (min) Vertical fin 3 mm (max) 7 mm (min) 9 mm (min) 2 Attach the spacer under the hook firmly after peeling off the double-sided tape. Spacer 3 Insert the hook in the vent of the air conditioner. Ensure the hook is firmly clipped to the fin. 4 Dock the Battery charger's belt clip in the attachment. Tips • Use the other hook (L) if the air conditioner is sloped. Hook (S) Hook (L) • You can adjust the angle of the attachment by sliding the rear of the car attachment. • Install the hook to face to the side if the fin of the air conditioner is vertical. g • Add another spacer (you will need to modify / fabricate this yourself) if the car attachment is unstable. To remove the attachment 1 Push the car attachment back, and push it gently off the fin. 17 mm (max) Notes • The car attachment may not install besides the above. Do not install the unit by force if installation is difficult. This may break a fin. • Take care not to install or remove the unit by force. A fin may break. • If necessary, protect the dashboard and the air conditioner vent with tape, etc., so as not to damage anything. • Install this unit in a place that does not disturb the air bag function or your driving. • Be sure to turn off the vent's auto-swing function if your car has one. 2 Remove the attachment while pressing the fin. Note If the attachment is pulled out and catches a fin, it may damage it. N Additional information Disposing of the Bluetooth earset For environmental conservation, be sure to remove the built-in rechargeable battery from the unit before you dispose of them, and dispose of the battery appropriately. 1 Remove the two screws from the rear. L R 2 Push hard around the arrow as illustrated to unlatch the unit assembly. 3 Lift lightly by the pipe microphone. 4 Remove the battery holder with battery first, and then remove the battery from the battery holder. Battery holder 5 Remove the connector. Note Be careful not to touch the circuit board attached to the battery box. Hold the battery box (black plastic box) when you remove the battery. Troubleshooting Problem Solution The recipient voice cannot be heard. Check that the power of the Bluetooth earset is on. And check that the Bluetooth function on the mobile phone is on. Check that to communicate the Bluetooth earset and the mobile phone. Check that the setting to use with Bluetooth earset while a calling. Check the volume of your mobile phone and Bluetooth earset. Make the pairing of Bluetooth earset and your mobile phone again when Bluetooth earset is connected to other Bluetooth products. Low sound from recipient Turn up the volume of your mobile phone and Bluetooth earset. The recipient cannot hear or easily your voice. Cancel the mute of Mic by pressing the volume button once when the Mic of the Bluetooth earset is muted. (Intermittent beep sound can be heard during muting.) Power does not turn on. Recharge the unit. The unit cannot be turned on when charging. Unplug the AC power adaptor from the Battery charger. The correspondence distance is short. (The noise mixes with the voice. ) If there are the obstacles between the Bluetooth earset and Bluetooth mobile phone, remove and avoid the obstacles. If there is equipment that generates electromagnetic radiation, etc., such as a wireless LAN, other Bluetooth equipment, a microwave oven nearby, move it away. Pairing can not be done. Pair the units by bringing the Bluetooth earset and the mobile phone close together. The Bluetooth earset cannot be charged. Dock the Bluetooth earset with the Battery charger so that the LED is turns green. When the contact terminals on the Bluetooth earset and the contact pins on the Battery charger are dirty, wipe them lightly with a soft dry cloth. Precautions • Avoid using Bluetooth earset with the volume turned up for an extended period of time. Doing so can damage your hearing. Listening at high volumes may also cause howling depending on the equipment connected with the earset. It is advisable to keep the volume at a moderate level at all times. • Do not leave the Bluetooth earset in a location subject to direct sunlight, heat, moisture or in a parked car. • Consult local lows and regulations regarding use of the Bluetooth earset while driving or cycling. • Using the Bluetooth earset may not function on mobile phones, depending on radio wave conditions and location where the equipment is being used. • If you experience discomfort after wearing the Bluetooth earset, take off the Bluetooth earset immediately. • Start dialing after connecting the Bluetooth earset to your mobile phone. Caring for others • If you have any questions or problems concerning the system that are not covered in this manual, please consult your nearest Sony dealer. • Be sure to bring the Bluetooth earset and the Battery charger to the Sony dealer when requiring repair work. Notes on Car attachment • Make sure this unit is fixed firmly before driving to avoid an accident or damage. • Do not handle the Battery charger while driving. • Do not leave the Battery charger inside a car in high temperature. This may damage the fins or this unit. • Take care that the Bluetooth earset and the Battery charger do not fall down while driving and during use. • The car attachment is only for the Battery charger. Do not install other device, as it may cause an accident or damage by dropping, etc. • Be sure to keep the unit out of the reach of children as it has small parts.
