5.4 MAC Address The main function of the switch is forwarding the packets to the correct ports based on the destination MAC address of the packets. Address Table contains the port-based MAC address information, which is the base for the switch to forward packets quickly. The entries in the Address Table can be updated by auto-learning or configured manually. Most entries are generated and updated by auto-learning. In the stable networks, the static MAC address entries can facilitate the switch to reduce broadcast packets and enhance the efficiency of packets forwarding remarkably. The address filtering feature allows the switch to filter the undesired packets and forbid its forwarding so as to improve the network security. The types and the features of the MAC Address Table are listed as the following: Type Configuration Way Aging out Being kept after Relationship between the reboot bound MAC address and (if the configuration the port is saved) Static Manually No Yes Address Table configuring The bound MAC address cannot be learned by the other ports in the same VLAN. Dynamic Automatically Yes No Address Table learning The bound MAC address can be learned by the other ports in the same VLAN.
