~ NOTICE: If you're not in an idling vehicle and the engine overheats, you wouldn't be there to the coolant temperature see gage. This could damage yourvehicle. Don't let your engine run when you're not in yourvehicle. Cold Weather Starting (Diesel Engine) The following tips will help YOLI get good starting i n cold weather. Use SAE IOW-30 oil when the outside temperature drops below freezing. When the outside temperature drops below 0°F (-I8"C), use your engine coolant heater. If you park yo~lr vehicle i n a garage, you shouldn't need to use the coolant heater until the garage temperaturegoes below 0" F (-I 8 O C), no matter how cold it is outside. To use the engine coolant heater, first turn off' the engine. Then open the hood, unwrap the electrical cordand plug it in. It uses normal house voltage ( 1 10 volts), but: A CAUTION: Plugging the cord into ungrounded outlet could cause an an electrical shock.Also, the wrong kind extension cord could of a overheat and cause fire. You could be seriously injured. Plug a the cord into properly grounded three-prong 110-volt outlet. If the cordwon't reach, usea heavy-duty three-prong extension cord rated for least 15 amps. at I NOTICE: After you've used the coolant heater, be sure to store the cord in was, to help keep it away from moving engine the manner it parts. If you don't, it could be torn and damaged. 2-17
