2.4 System memory 2.4.1 Overview The motherboard comes with six Double Data Rate 3 (DDR3) Dual Inline Memory Modules (DIMM) sockets. A DDR3 module has the same physical dimensions as a DDR2 DIMM but is notched differently to prevent installation on a DDR2 DIMM socket. DDR3 modules are developed for better performance with less power consumption. The figure illustrates the location of the DDR3 DIMM sockets: Channel Channel A Channel B Channel C Sockets DIMM_A1 and DIMM_A2 DIMM_B1 and DIMM_B2 DIMM_C1 and DIMM_C2 Recommended memory configuration for better performance Mode 2 DIMMs 3 DIMMs 4 DIMMs 6 DIMMs Sockets DIMM_A2 Populated Populated DIMM_A1 Populated Populated Populated Populated DIMM_B2 Populated DIMM_B1 Populated Populated Populated Populated DIMM_C2 Populated DIMM_C1 Populated Populated Populated Due to Intel CPU spec definition, the system will not boot if only one DIMM is installed in DIMM slot A2, B2, or C2. Follow the table above for recommended memory configuration. 2-12 Chapter 2: Hardware information
