GFMKIND , •ck; FUSE lA 3AG MODEL 44+ The 44+ is a CD-4 (Compatible Discrete 4-channel disc system) demodulator designed to recover four-channel information from disc recordings manufactured with the CD-4 system. It is intended for use with any fourchannel receiver or amplifier which lacks this capability. Connecting the 44+ Three pairs of audio cables are provided for your convenience in connecting the 44+ to your four-channel system. 1. Connect the L (left) and R (right) BACK OUTPUT receptacles of the 44 + to the corresponding input receptacles of your receiver or amplifier marked "Auxiliary" or "Line In". Harman/Kardon 75 +, 100+ and 150+ receivers have receptacles marked "DISCRETE PHONO/AUX" intended for this purpose (Do not use the "Phono" or "Line Out" receptacles of your receiver or amplifier.) 2. Connect the L (left) and R (right) FRONT OUTPUT receptacles of the 44 + to the corresponding input receptacles of your receiver or amplifier. 3. Connect the L (left) and R (right) BYPASS/OUTPUT receptacles of the 44+ to the corresponding input receptacles of your receiver or amplifier marked "Phono". If cables from your turntable or record changer already occupy these receptacles, remove them and connect the cables from the 44 + in their place. 4. Connect the audio cables from your turntable or record changer to the corresponding L (left) and R (right) INPUT receptacles of the 44+. You may place the "ground" connection of your turntable or record changer (if there is one) at the post marked "GROUND" on the 44 +. (This exchange may not produce the lowest possible hum level. After the 44 + has been fully adjusted to your system, you may experiment with the ground connection to determine the one that offers the lowest hum level.) NOTE: A ground connection should exist between the 44 + and your amplifier or receiver. Connection of the BYPASS/ OUTPUT receptacles to the phono inputs of your amplifier or receiver will satisfy this requirement. If you do not use the bypass facility of the 44+, make a ground connection from the grounding post of the 44+ to the one on your amplifier or receiver, using a piece of single strand wire. DO NOT connect both the ground wire of the turntable or record changer you are using with the 44 +, and a ground wire from the 44+, to the ground terminal of your amplifier or receiver. This will aggravate the effect of any hum and noise in the system. 5. For now, leave the LEFT and RIGHT SEPARATION controls at their present position. The next section of this manual deals with the proper adjustment of these controls for best CD-4 separation.
