6. You may connect the power cord to any convenient source of AC power, 110-120 volts 50 or 60 Hz'. However, it may be more convenient to make the power connection to one of the switched AC outlets at the rear of your amplifier or receiver. The 44+ power switch can then be left on; power for it will be supplied whenever your amplifier or receiver is turned on. A switched AC outlet is provided at the rear of the 44+ for your convenience. Power is available from it only when the 44 + is on. (NOTE: Automatic record changers should not be connected to the AC power outlet of the 44 . Their shut-off mechanisms require power through the entire shut-off cycle to ensure complete disengagement of the drive mechanism. If power supplied to a changer is interrupted before the drive mechanism has disengaged, rumble and mechanical problems may result.) CD-4: Other Equipment and Adjustments The CD-4 system relies on the transmission of signals at frequencies well beyond 20kHz. Cartridges (pickups) designed for stereophonic use are not generally capable of handling these frequencies at the levels required for the best reproduction of CD-4 discs. Special CD-4 cartridges are available that are designed to handle these frequencies. Only the use of one of these cartridges will allow the best reproduction of CD-4 discs through your system'. Adjusting the Separation Controls Each 44+ is adjusted at the factory for optimum separation. The marks on the separation controls indicate the points that will be approximately correct for most CD-4 cartridges. Cartridges do vary from manufacturer to manufacturer so you may wish to make a more precise adjustment for your individual requirements, but the following steps will not be necessary in most cases. Using a CD-4 disci with separation test tones: 1. Set the FUNCTION switch on the front panel of the 44 + to the "CD-4/AUTO" position. (The "mode" switch of your amplifier or receiver must be in discrete 4-channel position.) 2. Play the test tone for each channel (left and right) and adjust the corresponding SEPARATION control for minimum output from the corresponding back channel. Setting the balance control of your amplifier or receiver so you can hear only the back chan- nel you are adjusting will aid you in finding the "null" (minimum output) point. When both left and right channels have been nulled, the 44+ and your system are adjusted for optimum CD-4 separation. Operating the 44+ On the 44 + front panel, along with the power switch and its associated LED indicator lamp, there is a three-position FUNCTION switch marked STEREO/MATRIX, CD-4 AUTO, and BYPASS; and an LED indicator lamp marked CD-4 AUTO. 1. CD-4 AUTO can be used to play all the discs in your collection. When CD-4 discs are played, the carrier present in the grooves of the disc will be sensed by the 44+ and activate the demodulation circuitry. Four discrete channels of information will emerge at the front and back outputs and travel into your amplifier or receiver. This action will be indicated by the CD-4 AUTO lamp. The "mode" switch on your amplifier or receiver must be in the discrete position so the four channels pass through with full separation. When matrix (SQ, etc.) or stereo discs are played, the 44 + will pass their signals through in their original two-channel 1. Consult Harman/Kardon for information about use with other power sources. 2. The connection between the CD-4 cartridge and the 44-I- most exhibit a total capacitance of less than WOO' (picofarads) to assure proper CD-4 operation. If triggering of the CD-4 circuitry and LED indicator does not occur while playing a CD-4 disc, consult your dealer, or the turntable manufacturer, for information on the availability of connecting cables of low capacitance. 3. A special II armaniKardon disc is available from your dealer at a nominal charge.
