HP completes first phase of modular data center technology development
The HP Rack and Power Group and the Eaton Corporation are co-developing a fully enclosed IT rack system, or modular
data center (MDC). The MDC will provide power and cooling for a 100 KW heat load generated by four, six, or eight IT
racks. The project is partially funded by a $7.4 million grant from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) as part of the
American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. To read about the project and the DOE grant requirements, go to

Development phases
The MDC project is progressing through three development phases:
The Evaluation phase
We built an initial evaluation unit to test the MDC design specifications and demonstrate proof
of concept.
The Proto One phase
We will develop and validate the serviceability of a new MDC test unit called Proto One. Proto
One features HP-patented racks that roll in and out of the bays so that technicians can service a single rack without
affecting the operation or cooling of the remaining racks.
The Pilot One phase
Eaton will complete implementation of 360 V DC power to the MDC. We will try to integrate
MDC monitoring and control capabilities into HP System Insight Manager.
