Lowering the Hydraulic Lift The control handle MUST be in the open position (control valve positioned away from pump handle) to lower the boom and the patient. The rate of descent can be controlled by varying the amount that the control valve is opened.  A safety gate is part of the hydraulic system that controls the maximum descent of the boom regardless of how far the control valve is opened. 1. Perform one of the following: • WITH the patient in a sling - Gently open the control valve. See Detail "A". • WITHOUT the patient in a sling - Open the control valve and pull down on the boom. Lowering the Hydraulic Lift
