Basic Operation BBTuaarssniiccinOOgppOeernraattithoioennScanner Turn VOLUME clockwise to turn on the scanner, or counterclockwise until it clicks to turn it off. Setting the Squelch Your scanner's squelch control acts like a gate to reduce or eliminate noise from received signals. Turning SQUELCH clockwise raises the gate so high that only very strong signals can get through, while turning SQUELCH counterclockwise lowers the gate so that everything can get through - noise, weak signals, and strong signals. To set the squelch, you must first set the scanner to its manual mode and the scanner must not be receiving a signal. Follow these steps to set the scanner's squelch. 1. Adjust VOLUME to a comfortable listening level. 2. Repeatedly press MANUAL until you do not hear a signal. 3. Turn SQUELCH fully clockwise. 4. Turn SQUELCH counterclockwise until you hear a hiss. 5. Turn SQUELCH back clockwise just until the hiss stops. This sets the squelch so that only clearer signals can get through. You can change the squelch setting, if necessary, to provide better performance in your area. Using the Rotary Tuner Use the rotary tuner to: • Rapidly and precisely select frequencies or channels in the conventional or trunking mode. • Select a CTCSS tone during CTCSS programming in the conventional or trunking mode. • Scroll through scan and lockout lists in the trunking mode. To use the rotary tuner, press MANUAL to stop scanning if necessary. Then, if the green LOCK LED is on, press LOCK to unlock the rotary tuner. Then turn the rotary tuner to select frequencies, channels, or CTCSS tones, or scroll through scan and lockout lists. To program a channel, repeatedly press FREQ/CHAN until the CHAN LED lights. Then turn the rotary tuner to select the channel. To program a frequency, repeatedly press FREQ/CHAN until the FREQ LED lights. Then turn the rotary tuner to select the frequency. 20
