12 Erasing a prewritten LTO Tape Notice: Write-protection will not prevent a cartridge from being erased by bulk-erasure or degaussing. Do not bulk erase Ultrium format cartridges. This will destroy pre-recorded servo information and render the cartridge unusable. The erase feature in backup software is the preferred method for erasing an LTO tape.
