Hardware Installations and Upgrades / NOTE You must install processors in order. Therefore, you must populate CPU 1 socket to operate the board and to enable CPU 2 socket. CAUTION When opening a processor socket, DO NOT touch the gold socket wires. When unpacking a processor, hold by the edges only to avoid touching the gold contact wires. 1. Observe the safety and ESD precautions at the beginning of this book. See "Safety Information" for more information. 2. Turn off all peripheral devices connected to the server and turn off the server. 3. Disconnect the AC power cord from the server. 4. Remove the server's cover. See the document that came with your server chassis for instructions on removing the server's cover. 5. Locate the processor socket, push the lever handle down and away from the socket to release it (Step "A" in Figure 13), and rotate the lever open all the way (Step "B" in Figure 13). Figure 13. Open the load plate: push the rear tab with your fingertip to bring the front end of the load plate up slightly (Step "A" in Figure 14), and then open the load plate as shown in Figure 14 (Step "B"). Remove the processor socket protective cover: Grasp the socket protective cover by the two tabs and carefully lift it straight up as shown in Figure 15. 8. Locate the processor socket, push the lever handle down and away from the socket to release it (Step “A”

Open the load plate: push the rear tab with your fingertip to bring the front end of the load plate up slightly
(Step “A” in Figure 14), and then open the load plate as shown in Figure 14 (Step “B”).

Remove the processor socket protective cover: Grasp the socket protective cover by the two tabs and
carefully lift it straight up as shown in Figure 15.
8.
Save the protective cover.
