The following table describes some of the drives that can be installed in each bay and their height requirements. 1 Bay 1 - Maximum height: 43.0 mm (1.7 in.) 2 Bay 2 - Maximum height: 43.0 mm (1.7 in.) 3 Bay 3 - Maximum height: 25.8 mm (1.0 in.) 4 Bay 4 - Maximum height: 25.8 mm (1.0 in.) CD-ROM drive (preinstalled in some models) 5.25-inch hard disk drive 5.25-inch hard disk drive 3.5-inch hard disk drive (requires a mounting bracket) CD-ROM drive DVD-ROM drive CD-RW drive 3.5-inch diskette drive (preinstalled) 3.5-inch hard disk drive Notes: 1. Drives that are greater than 43.0 mm (1.7 in.) high cannot be installed. 2. Install removable media (tape or CD) drives in the accessible bays (bay 1 or 2). Installing a drive To install an internal drive, follow these steps: 1. Remove the cover. See "Removing the cover" on page 23. 2. If the computer has a CD drive or DVD drive, you might need to remove the signal and power cables from the drive. 3. Remove the bay panel from the drive bay by inserting a flat-blade screwdriver at the end and gently prying it loose. 4. Remove the metal shield from the drive bay by inserting a flat-blade screwdriver into one of the slots and gently prying it loose. 5. Make sure the drive that you are installing is set correctly as either a master or a slave device. v If it is the first CD drive or DVD drive, set it as a master device. 30 Hardware Maintenance Manual

Notes:

Installing a drive
To install an internal drive, follow these steps:
1.

2.
If the computer has a CD drive or DVD drive, you might need to remove the
signal and power cables from the drive.
3.
Remove the bay panel from the drive bay by inserting a flat-blade screwdriver
at the end and gently prying it loose.
4.
Remove the metal shield from the drive bay by inserting a flat-blade
screwdriver into one of the slots and gently prying it loose.
5.
Make sure the drive that you are installing is set correctly as either a master or
a slave device.
