Advanced (Recording pictures) [AF ASSIST LAMP] Focusing in low light conditions becomes easier [SUNSET], [FIREWORKS] and [AERIAL PHOTO] in scene mode. • The initial setting for [PET] in scene mode is [OFF]. (P46) Press [ MENU /SET ] to display the [REC] mode menu and select the item to set. (P59) Illuminating the subject makes it easier for the camera to focus when recording in low light conditions that make focusing difficult. • If the AF assist lamp is set to [ON], an AF area with a size wider than usual is displayed and the AF assist lamp A turns on when you press the shutter button halfway in dark places etc. The AF assist lamp turns on in low [ON] light conditions. At this time, the AF assist lamp icon [ ] appears on the screen. The effective range of the AF assist lamp is 1.5 m (4.92 feet). [OFF] The AF assist lamp does not turn on. • Be careful about the following when using the AF assist lamp. - Do not look at the AF assist lamp at close range. - Do not cover the AF assist lamp with your fingers or other objects. • When you do not want to use the AF assist lamp (e.g. when taking pictures of animals in dark places), set the [AF ASSIST LAMP] to [OFF]. In this case, it will become more difficult to focus on the subject. • The setting for [AF ASSIST LAMP] is fixed to [ON] in simple mode [ ]. • The setting for the [AF ASSIST LAMP] is fixed to [OFF] in [SELF PORTRAIT], [SCENERY], [NIGHT SCENERY], 68 VQT1F52 [SLOW SHUTTER] Recording bright pictures in dark places Press [ MENU /SET ] to display the [REC] mode menu and select the item to set. (P59) When taking pictures in dark places with low light, you can take pictures which are brighter than normal by selecting a setting even slower than the slowest setting of the shutter speed. • The slow shutter speeds you can select are: [1/8 -], [1/4 -], [1/2 -] and [1 -]. • This is effective if you want to take bright pictures of both a night landscape and a subject using [NIGHT PORTRAIT] in scene mode. Slow shutter setting Brightness Jitter 1/8 - Darker Less 1- Brighter More • This should usually be set to [1/8 -] to take pictures. (When you select a slow shutter speed other than [1/8 -], [ ] appears on the lower left of the screen.) • When the shutter speed is made slower using [SLOW SHUTTER], jitter is likely to occur. We recommend using a tripod and the self-timer for taking pictures. • You cannot set the slow shutter in Intelligent ISO sensitivity mode [ ] and simple mode [ ] and [SPORTS], [NIGHT SCENERY], [BABY1]/[BABY2], [PET], [HI-SPEED BURST], [STARRY SKY] and [FIREWORKS] in scene mode.
