Using the Onscreen Submenus: Features USING THE PICTURE-FORMAT CONTROL The TV's picture-format options allow flexibility in displaying video sources. The choices for the high-definition (HD) inputs (AV4) are 4:3 and Compress 16:9. The options for TV, AV1, CVI, AV2, and AV3 (side-panel inputs) are 4:3, AUTO, and EXPAND 4:3. See the descriptions of the options to the right and illustrations of them below. Selecting a Picture Format Using the Remote Control While watching a video source-with no onscreen menu or display present-press the CURSOR RING RIGHT or LEFT until you select the picture format you want. Or press the FORMAT button to perform the same function. BEGIN 1 Press the Volume + and - buttons simultaneously. The onscreen menu appears. 2 Press the Channel Down button repeatedly until FEATURES is highlighted. Then press the Volume + button to enter the FEATURES submenu. 3 Press the Channel Down button repeatedly until FORMAT is highlighted. Then press the Volume + or - button until you select the picture format you want. 4 Press the Volume + and - buttons simultaneously and repeatedly until you back out of the menu screens. Use the 4:3 picture-format option to view standard-size, full-screen video sources. The 4:3 format is the one most commonly used by broadcast stations. AUTO zooms the picture. Detects the presence of black borders in widescreen-format movies and fills the screen as much as possible, reducing the size of-or eliminating- the black borders. When you select AUTO while watching widescreen-format movies on commercial television, AUTO expands the picture, automatically readjusts the picture for correct viewing when commercials appear, and then returns the picture to expanded mode when the movie reappears. AUTO provides a more expansive zoom than EXPAND 4:3. EXPAND 4:3 zooms the picture. Use to expand a widescreen-format movie picture broadcast on commercial TV, reducing the size of-or eliminating-black borders. COMPRESS 16:9 squeezes the picture, forming black borders. Allows you to show high-definition video signal sources of the highest resolution (called 1080i) in their original widescreen (16:9) format, thus providing a more natural-looking picture. This option is available with the AV4 source only. WARNING To prevent uneven picture-tube aging, do not leave nonmoving images or black borders on the screen for an extended period. See page 57. Using the TV Buttons
Should your remote control become lost or other-
wise unavailable for use, follow the steps below to
use the buttons on the front of the TV to access the
onscreen menu and select a picture-format control.

Picture-format Options
NOTE:
Your TV’s screen has what is
referred to as a 4:3 aspect ratio, which is
conventional, standard size.
Use the
4:3
picture-format option to view
standard-size, full-screen video sources. The
4:3 format is the one most commonly used
by broadcast stations.
AUTO
zooms the picture. Detects the pres-
ence of black borders in widescreen-format
movies and fills the screen as much as possi-
ble, reducing the size of—or eliminating—
the black borders. When you select AUTO
while watching widescreen-format movies
on commercial television, AUTO expands
