Use the 4:3 picture-format option to view standard-size, full-screen video sources. The 4:3 format is the one most commonly used by broadcast stations. AUTO zooms the picture. Detects the presence of black borders in widescreen-format movies and fills the screen as much as possible, reducing the size of-or eliminating- the black borders. When you select AUTO while watching widescreen-format movies on commercial television, AUTO expands the picture, automatically readjusts the picture for correct viewing when commercials appear, and then returns the picture to expanded mode when the movie reappears. AUTO provides a more expansive zoom than EXPAND 4:3. EXPAND 4:3 zooms the picture. Use to expand a widescreen-format movie picture broadcast on commercial TV, reducing the size of-or eliminating-black borders. COMPRESS 16:9 squeezes the picture, forming black borders. Allows you to show high-definition video signal sources of the highest resolution (called 1080i) in their original widescreen (16:9) format, thus providing a more natural-looking picture. This option is available with the AV4 source only. WARNING To prevent uneven picture-tube aging, do not leave nonmoving images or black borders on the screen for an extended period. See page 57.
