Do not cut metal, plastics, masonry, non-wood, building materials; etc. b. Stop the saw if the chain strikes a foreign object. Inspect the unit and repair or replace parts as necessary. c. Keep the chain out of dirt and sand. Even a small amount of dirt will quickly dull a chain and thus, increase the possibility of kickback. 2. UNDERSTAND REACTIVE FORCES Pinch-KicicbackandPull-Inoccur when thechain is suddenly stopped bybeingpinched, caught, or by contacting a foreign object in the wood. This resultsinareversalofthechain force used tocutvvood and causesthe saw tomoveintheopposite directionof chain rotation.Eitherreaction can resultin lossofcontrol and possible serious personal injury KICKBACK WARNING Kickback canoccurwhenthemovingchaincontactsan object attheupperportionofthe tipof theguidebar or when the wood closes in and pinches the saw chain in the cut. Contactat the upperportion of the tip of the guidebarcan cause the chain to dig into the object and stop the chain for an instant. The result is a lightning fast, reversereaction whichkickstheguidebarupend back toward the operator. If the saw chainispinched along the top of the guide bar, the guide bar can be drivenrapidlybacktowardtheoperator.Eitherofthese reactions can cause loss of saw control which can resultinseriouspersonalinjury. • Pinch-Kickback -occurswhenthechain,ontopofthebaris suddenly stopped when the top of the bar is used for cutting. - rapidly drives the saw straight back toward the 11
