Phone Basics Entering Characters by Tapping the Keypad To enter characters by tapping the keypad: 1. Select the Alphabet mode. (See "Selecting a Character Input Mode"on page 43.) 2. Press the corresponding keys repeatedly until the desired letter appears (for example, to enter the word "Bill," press ABC twice, GHI three times, JKL three times, and JKL three times again). (If you make a mistake, press to erase a single character. Press and hold to delete word by word.) By default, the first letter of an entry is capitalized and the following letters are lowercase. After a character is entered, the cursor automatically advances to the next space after two seconds or when you enter a character on a different key. Characters scroll in the following order: Key English Sequence Upper Case Lower Case * . , @ 1 ? ! # / ABC A B C 2 a b c 2 DEF D E F 3 d e f 3 GHI G H I 4 g h i 4 JKL J K L 5 j k l 5 MNO M N O 6 m n o 6 PQRS P Q R S 7 p q r s 7 TUV T U V 8 t u v 8 WXYZ W X Y Z 9 w x y z 9 0 Space Space Shift Unshifted One-character- shifted Caps Lock Section 2A: Your Sprint PCS Phone - The Basics 47
