It is upwardly compatible with conventional Dolby Digital, so it offers greater flexibility in response to the source signal and the conditions of the playback device. Dolby Digital EX Dolby Digital EX is a 6.1-channel surround format from Dolby Laboratories that allows users to enjoy in their homes the "Dolby Digital Surround EX" audio format jointly developed by Dolby Laboratories and Lucasfilm. The 6.1-channels of sound, including surround back channel, provide improved sound positioning and expansion of the surround sound field.
