Shooting basics Using the flash Auto-flash (No indication) The flash fires automatically in low light or backlight conditions. To shoot a subject with backlight, position the target mark over the subject in the viewfinder. Red-eye reduction flash ( ) The light from the flash may make the subject's eyes appear red in pictures. The red-eye reduction flash mode reduces this phenomenon by emitting preflashes before firing the regular flash. This helps accustom the subject's eyes to the bright light and minimizes the red-eye phenomenon. The subject's eyes appear red. • After the pre-flashes, it takes about 1 second before the shutter is released, so do not move the camera and hold it firmly. • Effectiveness may be limited if the subject is not looking directly at the pre-flashes, or if the shooting range is too far. Individual physical characteristics may also limit effectiveness. Fill-in flash ( ) The flash always fires every time the shutter button is released. This mode is suitable when you need minimize shadows around the subject (such as the shade of tree leaves on the subject's face), in backlight conditions, or under artificial light such as a fluorescent lamp. The fill-in flash may not have the desired effect under excessively bright light. 34
