For example, to recall the present value, press s K. Positive or Negative Payments In annuity problems, the present value and future value are usually positive numbers. The payment amount may be positive or negative, depending on the type of problem you are solving. § If payments are discounted backward, the payment amount is positive. This is the case in mortgage, loan, bond, and lease problems. These problems have a present value, but they may or may not have a future value. (If there is no future value, FV=0.) § If payments are compounded forward, the payment amount is negative. This is the case in savings problems.
