103 Learning the Basics Using the DVD-ROM or multi-function drive Inserting a disc Before playing an audio CD, turn the volume down. Playing the compact disc at maximum volume could damage your ears. To turn the volume down, use the Volume Control switch or access the Volume Control program (click Start, All Programs, Accessories, Entertainment, Volume Control). 1 Hold the disc by its edges and check that it is clean and free of dust. Handle discs carefully. Avoid touching the surface of the disc. Grasp it by its center hole and edge. If you handle the disc incorrectly, you could lose data. If the disc is dusty, clean it as described in "Caring for CD or DVD Discs" on page 107. 2 With the label facing up, carefully place the disc partially into the slot until it stops or starts pulling the disc in.
