How To Check Power Steering Fluid You can check your fluid without taking the cap off. Just look at the reservoir. What to Use To determine what kind of fluid to use, see "Recommended Fluids and Lubricants" in the Index. D When the engine compartment is hot, the level should be between the HOT marks. D When the engine compartment is cool, the level should be between the COLD marks. NOTICE: When adding power steering fluid or making a complete fluid change, always use the proper fluid. Failure to use the proper fluid can cause leaks and damage hoses and seals. 6-35
