• Both named and unnamed objects in any proportion 1.2. Summary of Named Objects and Unnamed Objects You might find it useful to keep the following in mind when planning to implement named and unnamed objects in your cluster: • Unnamed objects: • Are named by DX Storage • Are created, updated, accessed, and deleted by UUID only • UUIDs are unambiguous • UUIDs are hard to remember and impossible to guess • Named objects: • Are named by you • Are created, updated, accessed, and deleted by name • Names are ambiguous (that is, you can create multiple objects with the same name, provided they are in different buckets) • Names are easy to remember and easy to guess 1.3. Common Named Object Terminology This section defines terms commonly used with named objects. • Domain. The highest level container for named objects. Your cluster administrator creates the domain for you. You need to know the name of the domain and whether or not it is the default cluster domain. (If your domain is the default cluster domain, you do not have to specify a domain name as the Host in SCSP requests.) Contact your cluster administrator to get this information. • Bucket. Contained by a domain and is a more specific way of specifying the "path" to a named object. Every bucket in a domain must have a unique name. Buckets cannot be nested in other buckets. You must create a bucket before you can create named objects. • Named object. The name of the object contained in a bucket (for example, a file name). Two or more objects in the same cluster can have the same name, provided they are in different buckets or in different domains. Every object in a bucket must have a unique name. In the following example, cluster.example.com is the domain name, marketing is the bucket name, and ads/about-object-naming.m4v is the object name. http://cluster.example.com/marketing/ads/about-object-naming.m4v Note Even though the bucket and object might resemble a file system, DX Storage is not a file system.
