Updating the baseboard management controller firmware 8 Create a DOS-bootable USB Disk-on-key device or DOS-bootable CD. 9 Download the BMC update file from support.gateway.com. 10 Follow the instructions included with the update file. Important At the completion of the firmware update, an error message 009 will be displayed. This error message can be ignored. 11 Turn off the server, then disconnect the power cords and wait for the Standby power LED to turn off. 12 Follow the instructions in "Opening the server case" on page 42. 13 Follow the instructions in "Removing the air ducts" on page 46. 14 Move the shorting block from pins 1-2 to pins 2-3 on the Boot Block Update jumper (J1B1) on the IMM module. 15 Move the shorting block from pins 2-3 to pins 1-2 on the Force Update jumper (J2B1) on the IMM module. 16 Follow the instructions in "Installing the air ducts" on page 47. 17 Follow the instructions in "Closing the server case" on page 52. Updating the FRU/SDR The FRU/SDR must be updated whenever you add additional hardware to your server that must be monitored by the BMC. This includes adding a redundant power supply module, adding redundant hot-swap fans, or adding an Intel Management Module (IMM). The FRU/SDR must also be updated whenever you update the BIOS. Each time you update the FRU/SDR, we recommend that you check support.gateway.com for the most current version of the utility. If you find a version that is newer than the one included on the SCCD, download the newer version and use it instead of the SCCD, following the instructions included with the new files. If you are using the SCCD to update the FRU/SDR, use the following procedure. To update the FRU/SDR from the SCCD: 1 Boot your server to DOS (using a DOS-bootable diskette, CD, or USB disk-on-key). 2 Put the System Companion CD in the CD drive. 3 When the menu opens, select the FRU/SDR utility. www.gateway.com 37
