Replacing the CMOS battery Replacing the CMOS battery If the server clock does not keep time or the settings in the BIOS Setup utility are not saved when you turn off the server, replace the CMOS battery with an equivalent battery. Warning There is a danger of explosion if battery is incorrectly replaced. Replace only with the same or equivalent type of battery recommended by the manufacturer. Dispose of used batteries following the manufacturer's instructions. To replace the battery: 1 Print the appendix for BIOS Settings in this guide. 2 Follow the instructions in "Opening the BIOS Setup utility" on page 66. 3 Record the BIOS settings on your printout, then close the utility. 4 Turn off your server, then follow the instructions in "Preventing static electricity discharge" on page 29. 5 Follow the instructions in "Opening the server case" on page 30. 6 Locate the old battery on the system board and note its orientation (see "System board" on page 5 for the general location of the battery). You will need to install the new battery the same way. If the server clock does not keep time or the settings in the BIOS Setup utility are not saved
when you turn off the server, replace the CMOS battery with an equivalent battery.
To replace the battery:

Print the appendix for
BIOS Settings
in this guide.

Follow the instructions in
“Opening the BIOS Setup utility” on page 66
.

Record the BIOS settings on your printout, then close the utility.

Turn off your server, then follow the instructions in
“Preventing static electricity
discharge” on page 29

Follow the instructions in
“Opening the server case” on page 30

Locate the old battery on the system board and note its orientation (see “System
board” on page 5 for the general location of the battery). You will need to install the
new battery the same way.

Push the battery retention clip away from the battery until the battery pops up.

Remove the old battery.
Warning
