Tape devices Backup software installation/config uration each IOP. The tape rack has two SCSI channels, that each operate two of the tape devices. On each of the IOP one tape device is configured on the CE using the Marathon manager, the other tape device is left in the IOP. Pure-local backup requires duplicate tape drives for both CE and IOPs for assured availability. Preferably the larger capacity DLT drive should backup CE where most of the data resides. Since the storage size for the IOP in general is small, low-cost and smaller capacity DAT drives are ideal. Pure-local backup requires three complete installation of backup software. One for CE, and one for each IOP. devices can degrade performance of a SCSI HBA channel. Use a dedicated SCSI HBA and save internal SCSI for the disk Netraid. The internal DLT drive requires two bay slots and the DAT only requires one. Use Marathon manager to configure Tape device into CE. If virtual network link to IOP is not available for network backup, add dedicated network card on each IOP. In semi-local backup configuration, only tape drives for CE are required. Again use DLT 80 tape drives for greater data storage capacity or can use DAT 24 where data capacity is not significantly large. Install backup software on CE for local backup. The IOPs are clients to the CE. Only clientside backup software components are required on each IOPs. Connect to a private backup LAN for best network backup performance and to reduce load on user network. Use an autochangers for the network backup. Since the changer usually cost more but can be shared to backup other systems on the same network. In network backup configuration, the CE and both IOP are backup clients. Each require only the clientside backup software components. 12/08/99 Hewlett-Packard Co. 5
