phoneline gateway FHSS (Frequency Hopping Spread Spectrum) Uses a narrowband carrier that changes frequency in a pattern known to both transmitter and receiver. Properly synchronized, the net effect is to maintain a single logical channel. To an unintended receiver, FHSS appears to be shortduration impulse noise. firewall A set of related programs, located at a network gateway server, that protects the resources of a network from users in other networks.
