10. Help Troubleshooting 10.3 When a function does not work, check here 10.3.1 Initial settings Problem I cannot hear a dial tone. I cannot make calls. The unit does not work. The unit does not ring. 10.3.2 General Cause & Solution L If you used a splitter/coupler to connect the unit, remove the splitter/coupler and connect the unit to the wall jack directly. If the unit operates properly, check the splitter/coupler. L Disconnect the unit from the telephone line and connect a known working telephone. If the working telephone operates properly, contact our service personnel to have the unit repaired. If the working telephone does not operate properly, contact your telephone company. L The power cord or telephone line cord is not connected. Check the connections. L If you connected the fax machine through a computer modem, connect the fax machine directly to a telephone line jack. L The dialing mode setting may be wrong. Change the setting (feature #13 on page 79, or feature 051 on page 88). L Check if the battery is installed correctly (page 18). L Check the connections (page 20). L Fully charge the battery (page 23). L The ringer volume is turned OFF. Adjust it (page 28, 29). L If more than one other user is using the handsets and base unit, the handset/base unit may not ring. Those users will hear incoming call tones (feature #73 on page 83, feature 13 on page 88 or feature 0*2 on page 90). Problem The unit displays "CHECK PAPER" even though paper is inserted. The other party complains they only hear a fax tone and cannot talk. The {REDIAL/PAUSE} button does not function properly. The receiving mode does not function properly. During programming, I cannot enter the code or ID number. Cause & Solution L The paper is inserted halfway. Insert it correctly (page 17) and press {START} to clear the message. L FAX ONLY mode is set. Tell the other party the number is only used for faxes. L Change the receiving mode to TEL mode (page 58), TAM/FAX mode (page 59) or TAM ONLY mode (page 61). L If you use a Distinctive Ring service, make sure you have set the same ring pattern assigned by the telephone company (page 63). L If this button is pressed during dialing, a pause will be inserted. If pressed immediately after a dial tone is obtained, the last number dialed will be redialed. L Distinctive Ring is set (feature #31* and feature #31# on page 81). L All or part of the number is the same as another code or ID. Change the number: - remote operation ID (code): feature #11 on page 79, or feature 063 on page 89, - fax activation code: feature #41 on page 82.
