10. Help Troubleshooting 10.3 When a function does not work, check here 10.3.1 Initial settings Problem I cannot hear a dial tone. I cannot make calls. The unit does not work. The unit does not ring. 10.3.2 General Cause & Solution L If you used a splitter/coupler to connect the unit, remove the splitter/coupler and connect the unit to the wall jack directly. If the unit operates properly, check the splitter/coupler. L Disconnect the unit from the telephone line and connect a known working telephone. If the working telephone operates properly, contact our service personnel to have the unit repaired. If the working telephone does not operate properly, contact your telephone company. L The power cord or telephone line cord is not connected. Check the connections. L If you connected the fax machine through a computer modem, connect the fax machine directly to a telephone line jack. L The dialing mode setting may be wrong. Change the setting (feature #13 on page 79, or feature 051 on page 88). L Check if the battery is installed correctly (page 18). L Check the connections (page 20). L Fully charge the battery (page 23). L The ringer volume is turned OFF. Adjust it (page 28, 29). L If more than one other user is using the handsets and base unit, the handset/base unit may not ring. Those users will hear incoming call tones (feature #73 on page 83, feature 13 on page 88 or feature 0*2 on page 90). Problem The unit displays "CHECK PAPER" even though paper is inserted. The other party complains they only hear a fax tone and cannot talk. The {REDIAL/PAUSE} button does not function properly. The receiving mode does not function properly. During programming, I cannot enter the code or ID number. Cause & Solution L The paper is inserted halfway. Insert it correctly (page 17) and press {START} to clear the message. L FAX ONLY mode is set. Tell the other party the number is only used for faxes. L Change the receiving mode to TEL mode (page 58), TAM/FAX mode (page 59) or TAM ONLY mode (page 61). L If you use a Distinctive Ring service, make sure you have set the same ring pattern assigned by the telephone company (page 63). L If this button is pressed during dialing, a pause will be inserted. If pressed immediately after a dial tone is obtained, the last number dialed will be redialed. L Distinctive Ring is set (feature #31* and feature #31# on page 81). L All or part of the number is the same as another code or ID. Change the number: - remote operation ID (code): feature #11 on page 79, or feature 063 on page 89, - fax activation code: feature #41 on page 82. 10.3.1 Initial settings
10.3.2 General

I cannot hear a dial tone.
L
If you used a splitter/coupler to connect the unit, remove the
splitter/coupler and connect the unit to the wall jack directly. If the
unit operates properly, check the splitter/coupler.
L
Disconnect the unit from the telephone line and connect a known
working telephone. If the working telephone operates properly,
contact our service personnel to have the unit repaired. If the
working telephone does not operate properly, contact your
telephone company.

The power cord or telephone line cord is not connected. Check the
connections.

If you connected the fax machine through a computer modem,
connect the fax machine directly to a telephone line jack.
I cannot make calls.
