06 Listening to your system Using the Virtual Surround Back mode (VirtualSB) Selecting this mode allows you to hear a virtual back channel through your surround speakers. For example, you can choose to listen to sources with no surround back channel information (for example, 5.1 encoded material) with emulated 6.1 encoding (VSB ON). Sometimes the material may sound better in the 5.1 format for which it was originally encoded. In this case you can have the receiver only apply this effect to 6.1 encoded sources like Dolby Digital EX or DTSES (VSB AUTO), or you can simply switch it off (VSB OFF).1 The table indicates when you will hear the virtual surround back channel. • Press EXTENDED MODE (front panel) repeatedly to select a virtual surround back channel option. Press repeatedly to select between: • VSB ON - Virtual Surround Back is always used (for example, on 5.1 encoded material) • VSB AUTO - Virtual Surround Back is automatically applied to 6.1 encoded sources (for example, Dolby Digital EX or DTS-ES) • VSB OFF - Virtual Surround Back mode is switched off Type of source Dolby Digital EX/ DTS-ES encoded multichannel source with 6.1ch surround VSB mode ON AUTO Standard Multichannel Stereo sources sources 2 Pro Logic II 2 Pro Logic ì ì Neo:6 Advanced surround ì ì Dolby Digital/DTS ON ì ì encoded multichannel source AUTO ì Dolby Digital/DTS encoded stereo source; other digital stereo source Analog 2-channel (stereo) source ON AUTO ON AUTO ì ì ì ì ì ì ì ì ì ì ì ì Note 1 • You can't use the Virtual Surround Back mode with headphones or the STEREO / DIRECT mode. • You can only use the Virtual Surround Back mode if the surround speakers are on and the Surr Back setting is set to NO in the Speaker setting on page 48. • The Virtual Surround Back mode cannot be applied to sources that do not have surround channel information. • You can't adjust the surround back channel level when you're listening to the virtual surround back channel. 40 En
