Homing Components After servicing the printer, it is important to manually set four components to their home position in order to avoid errors or grinding gears during the power-on sequence. Before powering on the printer, verify the following components are set to home: Assembly Printhead Wiper Assembly Printhead Titl Gear Printhead Process Motor Assembly Home Position Wiper Assembly at bottom of travel. Tilt gear disengaged from drive gear train. Printhead tilted forward against Drum (print position). Tilt Gear disengaged from drive gear train. Transfix Camshaft, Drum Maintenance Camshaft, and two large gears within Process Drive Assembly line up with home indicators. Home Indicator When the Wiper Assembly is in the home position, you can remove the Waste Tray. When the Wiper Assembly is raised up from home position, it locks the Waste Tray into the printer. When the Tilt Gear is disengaged, the two arrows on the left printer frame point at each other. When the Tilt Gear is disengaged, the two arrows on the left printer frame point at each other. A dot on the Transfix Camshaft lines up with a dot on the printer frame. A dot on the Drum Maintenance Camshaft lines up with an arrow on the ground plane. Two holes through the Process Drive Assembly housing line up with holes through the two large gears. Setting To Home If necessary, unlock the Wiper Assembly Lock. Rotate the wiper drive gears to move the assembly downward. If the Printhead is removed, reach inside the frame and rotate the gear. If the Printhead is installed, remove the Maintenance Kit. Then, use a screwdriver to rotate the Drum Maintenance Camshaft one revolution CW. You will hear a clicking sound when the Tilt Gear disengages the drive train. Disengage the Tilt Gear from its drive train. Move the Printhead Wiper Assembly to the bottom of its travel. Carefully guide the Printhead forward. You may need to move the Printhead horizontally before tilting it forward. Remove the Process Drive Assembly. Verify the Transfix Camshaft and Drum Maintenance Camshaft align properly with the homing marks. Before installing the Process Drive Assembly, verify the two large gears align with the holes through the assembly housing. Pin them in place and then reinstall the assembly. To avoid errors and grinding noises when powering on the printer, always home the Printhead Wiper Assembly, Printhead Tilt Gear, Printhead, and Process Motor Assembly before turning on the Power Switch. page 78 PHASER 8550, 8500, & 8400 SERVICE SECTION Version 1.0

Homing Components
After servicing the printer, it is important to manually set four components to their home position in order to
avoid errors or grinding gears during the power-on sequence. Before powering on the printer, verify the
following components are set to home:

Wiper Assembly at

When the Wiper Assembly is in the
home position, you can remove the
Waste Tray. When the Wiper
Assembly is raised up from home
position, it locks the Waste Tray
into the printer.
If necessary, unlock the Wiper Assembly Lock.
Rotate the wiper drive gears to move the
assembly downward.
Printhead
Titl Gear
Tilt gear disengaged
from drive gear train.
When the Tilt Gear is disengaged,
the two arrows on the left printer
frame point at each other.
If the Printhead is removed, reach inside the
frame and rotate the gear.
If the Printhead is installed, remove the
Maintenance Kit. Then, use a screwdriver to
rotate the Drum Maintenance Camshaft one
revolution CW. You will hear a clicking sound
when the Tilt Gear disengages the drive train.
