10-30 Vehicle Care Extended Storage: Remove the black, negative (−) cable from the battery or use a battery trickle charger. Front Axle When to Check and Change Lubricant It is not necessary to regularly check the front axle fluid unless there is a leak suspected or an unusual noise is heard. A fluid loss could indicate a problem. Have it inspected and repaired. Four-Wheel Drive Transfer Case When to Check Lubricant Refer to the Maintenance Schedule to determine how often to check the lubricant. See Scheduled Maintenance on page 11‑2. How to Check Lubricant To get an accurate reading, the vehicle should be on a level surface. How to Check Lubricant A. Drain Plug B. Fill Plug If the level is below the bottom of the fill plug hole, located on the transfer case, some lubricant will need to be added. Remove the plug and add enough lubricant to raise the level to the bottom of the fill plug hole. Use care not to overtighten the plug. What to Use See Recommended Fluids and Lubricants on page 11‑6.
