Shift Lock Release This vehicle is equipped with an electronic shift lock release system. Shift lock release is designed to do the following: To set the parking brake, hold the regular brake pedal down with your right foot and push down on the parking brake pedal with your left foot. If the ignition is on, the brake system warning light will come on. See Brake System Warning Light on page 3-36. To release the parking brake, hold the regular brake pedal down with your right foot while you push down on the parking brake pedal with your left foot. (To release the tension on the parking brake cable, you will need to apply about the same amount of pressure to the parking brake pedal as you did when you set the parking brake.) When you remove your foot from the parking brake pedal, it will pop up to the released position. Notice: Driving with the parking brake on can overheat the brake system and cause premature wear or damage to brake system parts. Verify that the parking brake is fully released and the brake warning light is off before driving. If you are towing a trailer and are parking on any hill, see Towing a Trailer on page 4-42. That section shows what to do first to keep the trailer from moving. • Prevent ignition key removal unless the shift lever is in PARK (P) with the shift lever button fully released • Prevent movement of the shift lever out of PARK (P) unless the ignition is in a position other than OFF Shift lock release is always functional, except in the case of a discharged or low voltage (less than 9V) battery. Parking Brake The parking brake is located on the driver's side under the instrument panel. 2-25
