If the computer will be disconnected from external power for more than two weeks-To extend the useful life of the battery pack, shut down the computer, then remove the battery pack and store it in a cool, dry place. If you plan to resume within two weeks-Initiating Hibernation clears the screen, saves your work to the hard drive, and uses less power than Suspend (Standby). Returning to work saved in Hibernation takes a little longer than returning to work placed in Suspend (Standby), but is much faster than returning to your place manually after restarting the computer. A fully charged battery pack supports Hibernation indefinitely. Using Standby (Suspend) and Hibernation Task Procedure Result Turn the computer on from shutdown Shut down the computer Slide power switch. Shut down the computer. Initiate Suspend* s Press suspend button.** or s Select Stand by (Windows 98 only) on the shutdown menu. Power/suspend* light turns on. Operating system loads. Power/suspend* light turns off. Operating system closes and turns off all power. Computer turns off. Power/suspend* light blinks. System beeps twice. Screen clears. *In Windows 98 the term Standby replaces the term Suspend. **In Windows 98 the term sleep button replaces the term suspend button. Continued Managing Power 5-3
