OPERATING PROCEDURE Every control on this receiver serves a specific and useful function and is important for the proper operation of your stereo or 4-CH system. Read this section carefully so you can take full advantage of all the performance capabilities of this receiver. TUNING The station tuning knob is located on the upper right hand section of the dial glass. It is used to select the desired stations when the Function Switch is in the AM or FM positions. FUNCTION SELECTOR SWITCH This switch selects the desired program source to be heard through your music system. T. AM POSITION This selects the AM section of your receiver. 2. FM POSITION This selects the FM section of your receiver. For STEREO FM reception place the front panel MODE switch in the STEREO position (pushbutton OUT). For MONO FM reception place the front panel MODE switch in the MONO position (pushbutton IN). 3. PHONO POSITION This selects your phonograph for playback through the 50 + receiver, Use this position for all mono, stereo or SQ matrix records. Any standard stereo record player can play SQ matrix discs without special modifications. The SQ disc is completely compatible with stereo systems and can be played on any quality record changer or manual turntable using a high compliance, magnetic pickup. Your existing record player connected to the LEFT and RIGHT PHONO input receptacles will play your mono, stereo and SQ records. In order to play SQ discs in 4-CH, the SQ Matrix Switch must be depressed. 4. DISCRETE PHONO/AUX POSITION: This position permits a 4 channel source to be played through this system (lope recorder, cartridge player, RCA discrete system with special adapter). This RCA discrete system is different than the SQ matrix design and re- quires a special adapter between your phonograph and Harman/Kardon 50+ receiver. Your phonograph should employ a high compliance, low tip-mass phono cartridge capable of extending in frequency response to beyond 45,000 Hertz to play back the RCA disc. The special adapter should be connected to the LEFT and RIGHT FRONT/BACK DISCRETE PHONO/AUX receptacles located on the rear panel of the 50+ . Harman/Kardon intends to manufacture an adapter for use with the RCA discrete system. For addiitonal information on this system and the availability of the Harman/Kardon discrete phono adapter, write to our Customer Service Department. VOLUME CONTROL The volume control is divided into two sections. The outer knob controls front volume. The inner knob controls the back volume. The volume control serves two functions on the 50+ receiver, Its prime function is to set the volume levels of front and back speakers. However in doing so, you also set the balance between the front and back speakers. If you want more sound emanating from the front speakers, rotate the outer control slightly ahead of the inner control. If you want greater volume from the back, merely rotate the inner volume control slightly ahead of the outer control. In most instances the two volume controls will be approximately even. However, it should be noted that they may be set anywhere within their range of rotation to attain proper system volume and balance. BALANCE CONTROL The balance control is divided into two sections. The outer knob controls left to right balance of the front channel. The inner knob controls left to rigtht balance of the back channel. These controls are specially designed to give you optimum balance over front and back speakers regardless of where or how they are placed. In most instances the controls will be set in the center of their rotation. However, it should be noted that they may be set anywhere within their range of adjustment to attain proper system balance. BASS AND TREBLE CONTROLS These controls are employed to set the tonal balance of your stereo or 4-CH system. The bass control adjusts the low frequencies, either strengthening or diminishing the intensity of these sounds. The treble control adjusts the higher frequencies in the same manner - either strengthening or diminishing the sound. 10
