In most instances these controls will be set to the "flat" or center position. If bass or treble adjustment is necessary, do not rotate these controls to their maximum settings. This may introduce distortion especially if your speakers cannot handle the power of the boosted sound. These controls should be used sparingly and with the knowledge that live music is neither excessively sharp or boomy. SQ MATRIX SWITCH In the normal or "OUT" position all phono records will be played back in either the conventional stereo or mono modes depending upon the setting of the MODE switch. To play SQ records, merely depress the SQ MATRIX switch. Be sure the MODE switch is in the stereo position. This position may also be used to synthesize (convert) stereo records, FM or AM into pseudo-quadriphonic sound. Play any stereo disc, AM or FM and set the 5Q MATRIX switch to the "IN" position. If your 50 + has been installed in 4-CH with four speakers, the sound will emerge from each speaker filling the room with sound that is almost as exciting as authentic 4-CH. When utilizing a four channel source this switch should be in the "OUT" position. TAPE MONITOR SWITCH If your tape recorder has a special monitoring feature, throwing this switch "IN" will permit you to monitor your tapes a split second after they are recorded. When not in use this switch must be in the "OUT" position, otherwise it will defeat the output of the receiver. This switch and associated rear panel receptacles, both front and rear, can also be used as a second set of stereo or 4-CH high level inputs. Refer to paragraph under CONNECTING YOUR TAPE RECORDER for additional information on the use of this switch and associated conveniences. HEADPHONES The stereo or 4-CH headphone receptacles located on the front panel of your 50+ receiver will accept any type of headphone. Stereo phones come with a single plug which should be connected to the FRONT receptacle. 4-CH phones come with two plugs. Connect the front plug to the FRONT receptacle and the back plug to the BACK receptacle. The headphone receptacles are "ON" at all times. To listen only to your phones without having your speakers on, merely set the SPEAKER switch on the front row of pushbuttons to "OFF". TUNING METER Your receiver incorporates a precision meter for tuning all AM and FM stations. Proper tuning is indicated by maximum deflection of the needle (highest point). Stronger stations show greater needle movement. SELECTING MONO OR STEREO FM BROADCASTS Place the FUNCTION SELECTOR switch in the FM position, Place the MODE switch in the STEREO position. As you tune across the FM dial, stations will come in either in mono or stereo depending upon the method of transmission. An automatic circuit within the 50+ senses a stereo signal and switches automatically to the stereo mode. A red indicator light on the front panel dial glass will show when a stereo signal is received. Should the station conclude the stereo broadcast and switch back to standard FM, your receiver will automatically switch back to mono reception bypassing the stereo FM circuitry. It should be noted that the stereo/mono threshold is factory preset for stereo broadcasts which can be received without excessive noise and distortion. If a stereo FM broadcast is excessively noisy it will be switched automatically to the mono mode of operation. MODE SWITCH When this switch is in the normal position your receiver is operating stereophonically. When it is depressed, your receiver is operating in the monophonic mode. SPEAKER SWITCH In order to hear any or all of the speakers connected to your system, this switch must be depressed. When in the "ON" position all speakers connected to the system are "ON". Should you desire to listen to stereo or 4-CH headphones alone, the speakers can be turned off at your discretion. POWER SWITCH This switch is located on the front panel next to the headphone recptacles. Depress to turn the receiver ON. Depress and release to turn the receiver OFF. DIAL SCALE The dial scale on your receiver is marked with three scales, namely, an FM frequency scale (88-108MHz), a logging scale (0-100), and an AM frequency scale. Since most FM stations at frequencies which are not whole numbers (such as 96MHz as compared to 96.3MHz), ideally, each megacycle divsion on the frequency scale should be divided into 10 parts to enable the user to pinpoint the location of the station. This would require a dial scale which would not be practical. The logging scale which is divded into 100 equal parts provides a means of finding your favorite station, once you have noted its position on the logging scale. For example, in New York City, WQXR operates at 96.3MHz. After locating this station through the use of the frequency scale (between 96 and 98MHz), you find that the pointer may fall on 44 on the logging scale. Make a note of this setting. For future tuning to WQXR simply set the pointer to 44 on the logging scale. 11

TUNING
METER
Your
receiver
incorporates
a
precision
meter
for
tuning
all
AM
and
FM
stations.
Proper
tuning
is
indicated
by
maximum
deflection
of
the
needle
(highest
point).
Stronger
stations
show
greater
needle
movement.
SELECTING
MONO
OR
STEREO
FM
BROADCASTS
Place
the
FUNCTION
SELECTOR
switch
in
the
FM
position,
Place
the
MODE
switch
in
the
STEREO
position.
As
you
tune
across
the
FM
dial,
stations
will
come
in
either
in
mono
or
stereo
depending
upon
the
method
of
trans-
mission.
An
automatic
circuit
within
the
50+
senses
a
stereo
signal
and
switches
automatically
to
the
stereo
mode.
A
red
indicator
light
on
the
front
panel
dial
glass
will
show
when
a
stereo
signal
is
received.
Should
the
station
conclude
the
stereo
broadcast
and
switch
back
to
standard
FM,
your
receiver
will
automatically
switch
back
to
mono
reception
bypassing
the
stereo
FM
circuitry.
It
should
be
noted
that
the
stereo/mono
threshold
is
factory
preset
for
stereo
broadcasts
which
can
be
received
without
excessive
noise
and
dis-
tortion.
If
a
stereo
FM
broadcast
is
excessively
noisy
it
will
be
switched
auto-
matically
to
the
mono
mode
of
operation.
DIAL
SCALE
The
dial
scale
on
your
receiver
is
marked
with
three
scales,
namely,
an
FM
frequency
scale
(88-108MHz),
a
logging
scale
(0-100),
and
an
AM
frequency
scale.
Since
most
FM
stations
at
frequencies
which
are
not
whole
numbers
(such
as
96MHz
as
compared
to
96.3MHz),
ideally,
each
megacycle
divsion
on
the
frequency
scale
should
be
divided
into
10
parts
to
enable
the
user
to
pinpoint
the
location
of
the
station.
This
would
require
a
dial
scale
which
would
not
be
practical.
The
logging
scale
which
is
divded
into
100
equal
parts
provides
a
means
of
finding
your
favorite
station,
once
you
have
noted
its
position
on
the
logging
scale.
For
example,
in
New
York
City,
WQXR
operates
at
96.3MHz.
After
locat-
ing
this
station
through
the
use
of
the
frequency
scale
(between
96
and
98MHz),
you
find
that
the
pointer
may
fall
on
44
on
the
logging
scale.
Make
a
note
of
this
setting.
For
future
tuning
to
WQXR
simply
set
the
pointer
to
44
on
the
log-
ging
scale.
