par* and vpar* commands fail Parcon services are not available during Superdome 2 Online Firmware Update. Due to this unavailability, all par* and vpar* commands will fail. The affected commands include, but are not limited to: parcreate, parmodify, parperm, parstatus, vparcreate, vparmodify, vparstatus, and others. Online partition update IMPORTANT: Guidelines for online firmware updates Online complex firmware updates should be coordinated with partition and application operations, so as not to coincide with other administrative activities. Partition or application maintenance, configuration changes, or other actions which rely on platform management capabilities should not be conducted simultaneously with online complex firmware updates. This coordination will largely avoid impact from services which are unavailable during online updates. During online partition updates, the partition firmware is installed but does not become active until the nPar reboots. This enables rolling upgrades, where nPars are updated one at a time as downtime to reboot becomes available. Single partition update To target a firmware update to a single online partition, use one of the following commands. IMPORTANT: More than one command line modifier can be applied in a given situation. However the modifiers however must be applied in the following order: 1. [FORCE] 2. [REINSTALL] 3. [NOEXECUTE] Updating to a higher bundle revision oa> UPDATE NPARTITION Updating to a lower bundle revision oa> UPDATE NPARTITION FORCE Checking the Status of Bundle, no update occurs oa> UPDATE NPARTITION NOEXECUTE Overwriting a bundle of the same revision oa> UPDATE NPARTITION REINSTALL All partitions update Use the following command to update all partitions present in the system as well as any blades that are not currently assigned to any partition: oa> UPDATE NPARTITION ALL NOTE: The [FORCE], [REINSTALL], and [NOEXECUTE] command modifiers still apply. Blade update This is not possible as a blade unassigned to a partition cannot boot an OS instance. Online complex firmware update on Superdome 2 183
