Enjoying surround sound The following chart gives a summary of this unit's surround features. Note • All the features are only effective if speakers are used. No discernible effect will be heard through headphones. • None of the features are effective when radio is selected as the source. • You may experience a reduction in sound quality when these surround systems are used with some sources. If this occurs, turn the surround system off. Surround system Features Software DOLBY DIGITAL (➡ page 20) • Dolby Digital is a discrete 5.1 (6) channel surround system developed for cinema use. The sound signals in Dolby Digital format are compressed to 1/10 their original size, allowing an entire movie to be re- corded on a single DVD. • This unit automatically recognizes DVDs that have been recorded with Dolby Digital. • Not all Dolby Digital sources are record- ed with 5.1 (6) channels. Some sources marked Dolby Digital may be recorded in Dolby Surround, a 2 channel system. Software encoded with Dolby Digital can be identified with this mark. • DVD DOLBY PRO LOGIC (➡ page 20) Dolby Pro Logic is a decoding system that was developed to get a better sense of presence from sources encoded with Dolby Surround. The balance of sound has been improved by the addition of a separate center speaker channel. If D2 is less than D1 Start at 0 ms for Dolby Digital or 15 ms for Dolby Pro Logic, and increase by 5 ms for every 1.5 m (5 feet) of difference between D1 and D2.
