Preparation The hem should be prepared in the same way as for sewing by hand. Oversew raw edge, baste and press. Positioning the hem The hem is positioned under the foot as shown in Fig.1. Sewing test (Either on a remnant of fabric or directly on the hem.) Given the variations in fabric thickness, it is advis- able to sew a test piece first. As when sewing by hand, the needle should only catch the fold of the fabric. Because of these variations, a slight adjustment may be necessary. Sew slowly until the needle swings to the left.
