Transient overvoltages are either non-oscillatory (impulsive) or oscillatory signals on mains caused by lightning strikes, switching of heavy loads, such as motors, welders, power factor correction banks, or switching of overcurrent protection devices. Transient overvoltage can cause damage to the insulation of motors, transformers, and electronic equipment. Depending on the overvoltage category, peak values can occur, see Table 14. Table 14. Transients.
Transient overvoltages are either non-oscillatory (impulsive) or oscillatory signals
on mains caused by lightning strikes, switching of heavy loads, such as motors, welders, power
factor correction banks, or switching of overcurrent protection devices.
Transient overvoltage can cause damage to the insulation of motors, transformers, and
electronic equipment. Depending on the overvoltage category, peak values can occur, see
Table 14

Measurement modes:
PQ Meter
PQ Logger
Parameters to configure:
Trigger on/off
Sample rate 1 MS/s or 20 MS/s
On the Fluke 1777, use 1 MS/s if the subsequent waveform after the event up to 0.5 s is of
interest.
Note
The use of 1 MS/s impacts the accuracy of the peak measurement.
